This program prepares students to perform the roles and responsibilities of a fitness and health consultant. Fitness and health consultants provide services including planning, promoting and delivering a wide variety of services. These services include activity and educational programs, which enhance the health, fitness and well-being of individuals and groups in diverse settings.
This two-year diploma program assists students in developing skills in Recreation and Leisure Services. Core courses include: leadership, programming, marketing, administration, planning and special events.
Field placement provides on-the-job training and experience, contributing to the overall marketability of graduates.
This graduate certificate program enables students to gain the skills and knowledge required to successfully meet the leisure needs of the diverse older adult population. The program offers 700 hours of specialized learning and practical application over two terms.
The program relies on experts in the field to develop and lead courses. Classes in each course provide a strong theoretical foundation on which learners build through hands-on experiences in the community. All practical experiences are supervised by experts in the field while being supported by the college. Blackboard, the College's online network, will be used as a communication tool.
Over their year of study, students will progress from job shadowing to leading their own program. At the end of the program, each student will present an oral report of his or her program and develop a written account suitable for publication.
Students receive 400 hours of classroom theory and 200 hours of hands-on training and practical experiences. A few program highlights are: canoe tripping, hiking, snowshoeing, dog sledding, and participating in a variety of workshops including: search and rescue training, camping skills, cross country skiing, nature identification, earth science, native customs and traditions, and outdoor games and activities.

You will acquire the skills to complete client assessments, develop and evaluate group and individualized programs, and use a variety of facilitative techniques to assist individuals to participate in meaningful recreational activities that will enhance health, improve functional ability, and increase quality of life.
The Fitness and Health Promotion program at Humber fully prepares each graduate to enter the fitness industry as a fitness professional. We pride ourselves in the fact that our graduates are able to plan, market, and deliver safe and effective fitness, wellness, and healthy lifestyle programs. Students in this program gain knowledge and hone their skills in the areas of anatomy, physiology, fitness appraisal, health counselling, exercise prescription, nutrition, group exercise leadership, injury management, operation/ management of fitness facilities, marketing and entrepreneurship, and health promotion. The program curriculum provides in-depth academic preparation, hands-on professional experience, and the opportunity to earn nationally-recognized certifications. Industry certifications that are built into the program include: Certified Personal Trainer, Personal Trainer Specialist, Fitness Instructors Specialist.
The Recreation and Leisure Services program at Humber prepares students to work in this broad and diverse industry, students learn the knowledge necessary to work in a variety of recreation and sport facilities, both indoor and outdoor. This program focuses on acquiring knowledge of the recreation and sports administration industry, recreational program design and delivery, special events operations, and facilities and staff management. Students are trained in recreation theory and learn how to apply that theory through the use of practical training. The program also includes an online simulation for program management (class software by the Active Network) used by community recreation departments and associations; earn certification in Parks and Recreation Ontario's HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development program.

The term Recreation and Leisure Services identifies a complex process - the delivery of recreation activities and programs designed to provide leisure experiences which are truly satisfying and rewarding for the participants. The RLSC curriculum at Seneca incorporates the following key elements: a common first-year curriculum with Recreation Facility Management (RFMC), which gives students the opportunity to make a more "informed" career choice before entering the RLSC or RFMC path in the second year of study; the opportunity for students interested in outdoor recreation to customize their course of study to include specialized outdoor courses focusing on outdoor skills, such as canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing and wilderness tripping; an experiential approach that incorporates the natural resources of King Campus (696 wooded acres); a business approach toward the provision of leisure services that reflects the emphasis on accountability in the public sector and the trend toward privatization and entrepreneurial strategies.
